Emily Mary Fry was the first child of William Fry & Harriett Hudson born July 10th, 1875 & christened September 5th, 1875 at St Mary’s, Hartfield, Sussex.
In 1881 Emily was living with her parents, sister Elizabeth & brother William at Frogs Hole Farm, Hartfield.
Emily’s father died in 1882 & in 1891 Emily was living with her widowed mother, & 2 brothers at Chuck Hatch grocer’s shop in Hartfield where her mother was a master grocer.
At the time of the 1901 census Emily was living with her aunt Mary Baines (nee Hudson) & her husband John, a farmer, at Lancasters Farm, Henfield, Sussex. She was described as an assistant helper. Living nearby in Henfield on the High St was her future husband James Greenfield, a 30 year old market gardener. The Greenfield family had been market gardeners in the Henfield area from 1862.
Emily married James Greenfield on November 5th, 1901, at St Peter’s, Henfield. Emily wore a dress of cream voile with a hat to match, & carried a beautiful bouquet of white chrysanthemums. One of the bridesmaids was Emily’s sister, Elizabeth. Their honeymoon was spent in Hastings. James was christened July 10th, 1870 at Henfield, Sussex, the son of Sarah & George Greenfield, a farmer & market gardener. The Greenfield family had been market gardeners in the Henfield area from 1862.
In 1911 Emily & James were living at High St, Henfield, Sussex & James was still a market gardener. They had 4 children at the time of the census – Alice Emily (8), William James (6), Frank Harold (4) & Dorothy May (1).
James died on January 19th, 1922 at Henfield. Probate was granted on April 19th, 1922 at Chichester to John Curd, retired butcher, William Fry [f.7.6.3], farmer (Emily’s brother ) & Charles James Aubrey Wade, solicitor. James’ effects were £3,802.5s.3d.
The 1939 register shows Emily still running the market garden business at 1 Brook House, High St, Chanctonbury, Sussex. Assisting her in the business were sons Frank & Frederick, both doing heavy duties. They had an unpaid domestic servant, Lilian R Martin (35). Son William & his wife Dorothy E & daughter Margaret E, were also living in Chanctonbury, at Southways. William was assisting his mother in heavy duties at the market garden. Daughter Alice, who had married Thomas Thorns in 1923 was also living in Chanctonbury in 1939 where Thomas was a butcher’s assistant.
Emily of Clovelly, Cagefoot Lane, Henfield died on February 26th, 1962. Probate was granted on July 31st, 1962 to sons William James, Frank Harold & Frederick George Greenfield, all market gardeners. Emily’s effects were £3,062.3s.2d.
